Movie blog - "life is beautiful"
Life is Beautiful is a movie based on the holocaust in Germany which came out in 1997. The main character (Guido) is a humorous Italian Jew who gets married to a women named Dora and eventually, they have a child named Joshua. This movie is about the Nazi's prosecution of Jewish people throughout Germany. The family is taken to one of the many concentration camps in Germany. The men and women are separated. Guido and his son are put in a bunk room together. Guido hides his son Joshua from the Nazi soldiers. He tells him that they are participating in a big game, and that the person who gets the most amount of points wins a tank at the end of the game. Guido's positive and clever character is what gets his family through the horrors of the concentration camp. In the end, Guido is killed. His son and wife, however, survive the camp and are reunited at the end of the movie. I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was very well made in the way that it shows how awful life in the camps were, but at the same time shows how one can make a difference as long as you stay positive, and have enough love for others. It was a really beautiful story.
What were the challenges that the Weimar Republic faced in the first years of its existence? What were the steps that Mussolini took to rise to power in Italy?
In the first years of the Weimar Republic's existence, they faced two significant challenges: the 1919 Spartakist Uprising, and the 1920 Kapp Putsch. The Spartakist Uprising was a German Communist Party led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. They tried to take over Berlin in January 1919, but were brutually put down by the Freikorps. The second challenge was the Kapp Putsch in 1920. Putsch stand for the overthrow of a government. The Freikorps, who previosly shut down Liebknecht and Luxemburg, get rid of the republic government.
Mussolini is said to be the founder of Fascism. To assist his rise to power he created a secret police called the blackshirts. In 1923 he marched on Rome and after King Emmanuel III refused to sign emergency legislation he took power. After that he was sanctioned by the Pope in exchange for the Vatican to become a private state.

What were Hitler's steps in his rise to power?
Hitler was very smart and used good tactics during his rise to power. He used the German great depression to swiftly win over the German people. Using the concept of deficit financing Hitler decreased unemployment drastically and gained great support. Next, Hitler uses the burning of the German parliment to convinvce the government that there was a communist uprising on the horizon. They then pass the enabling act which allowed Hitler to pass laws without consulting the Reichstag. This was the start of his power. He then introduced his secret police called the SS to enforce the laws he passed. After that he has an "election" where he uses intimidation to win over 99% of the votes. Hitler manipulated many people to come to power and used the fear of economic down turn and communism as a segway to convince people.
