In what ways did the USA lose the Vietnam War? Did the domino theory occur as a result?
In 1969 Richard Nixon decided to stop America's involvement in the Vietnam war. America attempted to train and supply the south in order for them to be able to keep fighting once America had completely left. Once a majority of troops had left the Americans began bombing North Vietnam while training the southern forces. However all of this was unsuccessful since the North would end up conquering the south. This meant that the US failed to contain the spread of communism, which was their initial purpose for interfering. The Vietnam war was a war of containment, yet the Americans failed to contain the spread of communism since they pulled out of the war due to lack of support on the home front. Later neighbouring countries, Laos and Cambodia, would fall to the communist North Vietnam. This was a fear that the US had initially and was a key factor in justifying their involvement in Vietnam, however the domino effect was a reality after the Americans left Vietnam.
List 4 detente events and describe which one you think had the most success in lessening tensions in the Cold War?
Detente was used in the cold war as an act to lessen the tension. There were four events that were involved in Detente: the Helsinki Accords, the Nuclear non- Proliferation Treaty, Ostopolitik, and the SALT talks. Out of these four the Nuclear non-Proliferation treaty was the most successful in lessening the tension during the Cold War. The Nuclear non- Proliferation Treaty created in 1968 was international. The idea was to stop more countries from creating nuclear weapons this in return would lessen the threat of nuclear war. Therefore the countries that had nuclear power was limited to five: United States of America, Russia, China, France, and UnitedKingdom. The non-proliferation treaty was a big aspect in lessening the cold war tension.
To what extent did the USA win the Cold War through economics?
When Ronald Reagan came into power as the United States 40th President his thoughts on economic growth being most effective by lowering the publics barriers to produce services will then in return help the consumers by being more supply at a lower price. Throughout the cold war the americans had the financial advantage. Through out the cold war both sides invested heavily in technology research. This technology included weaponry and space equipment. Both sides researched whatever the other was researching in order to ensure that the other side would not gain a technologic advantage. The Soveits thought they had an advantage against the USA becasue they knew their secret, however, it actually but the Soviets in a worst position. Since the US had made it known to the Soviets that they were investing tons of money into the massive defense network called Star Wars, the Soviets tried to match it. America never was sucessful in bulding star wars, but they were sucessful of putting themselved much ahead of the Soviets. The soviets had limited resources and this lead to Glasnost as a method for the Soviets to regain some deficit. Glasnost leads to the falling of the Berlin Wall and essentially the end of communism and the cold war.
